4. MLO 4: Research and Technology:
4.1. Students gain knowledge of appropriate research methodologies and are able to apply them in their studies.
4.2. Students use appropriate technologies in research and studies relative to Japanese language and culture.
4.3. Students collect, manage and analyze current and emerging technology-based resources to develop and produce their scholarly work.
Courses taken to fulfill this requirement:
JAPN 400 - Advanced Interpersonal Communication
This course aims to develop advanced proficiency in interpersonal communication through the formulation of research questions and conducting research utilizing appropriate technologies. Taught in Japanese.
JAPN 404 - Advanced Japanese Presentational Communication
This course aims to develop advanced proficiency in communication through oral presentations and developing research papers to present in Japanese using appropriate media. Taught in Japanese.
MLO 1: Reflective Narrative
The course Advanced Interpersonal Communication (JAPN 400) contributed to my advanced proficiency in interpersonal communication through the formulation of research questions and conducting research utilizing appropriate technologies which fulfills MLO4.1. Through this course I have gained much experience with regards to appropriate research methods and use of technology. Technology has enabled me to further my studies and produce decent quality work including presentations, research surveys, results analysis, as well as this online portfolio completing MLO 4.2. Being taught in Japanese, Japanese 400 furthered my understanding of Japanese language allowing me to create and conduct surveys in Japanese. In Japanese 404 (Advanced Japanese Presentational Communication), we developed advanced proficiency in communication through oral presentations and developing research papers to present in Japanese using appropriate media. This class was also conducted in Japanese which again furthered my Japanese language comprehension.
One point to make about this MLO is that in order to interpret our data and properly graph and display our results, a level of Excel competency is required. If I had not had the requisite training during my time studying math at community college, I could not have completed analysis. The point to make is that the excel training is not provided whatsoever despite the requirement. Nevertheless, somewhere along the course of the program I learned how to use technology sufficiently enough for the intents and purposes of this portfolio as well as my research-based capstone project. The program however, could benefit from a separate class on research methods and technological implementation. I have learned kills which I did not have prior knowledge of prior to entering the Japanese program and I greatly appreciate the transition from physical to online portfolios. During JAPN 400 and JAPN 404, a number of guest speakers have provided us with all the technological resources requisite to complete our capstone projects. We met with the library research staff and the World Language and Culture technology department faculty to analyze, manage, and collect online and offline resources we used to conduct out research, analyze our data, and digitally archive our work thus completing MLO 4.3 (see attached file for data sheets).
