JAPN 301: Adv Japanese Lang Cult & Com
Description
This course further continues development of advanced proficiency in interpersonal, interpretive and presentational modes of communication in speaking, listening, reading and writing. Students develop communication strategies and cultural knowledge through content-based instruction. Taught in Japanese.
This course was one of the courses I enrolled in right after returning from studying abroad in Japan. The course had a very good textbook which I will review many times. It was also taught in a similar fashion to the classes I took in Japan which made for a somewhat smooth transition between educational styles. The fact that the course was taught in Japanese allowed me to further expand on my Japanese comprehension abilities. We covered a lot of grammar in the course which was a little too intense at sometimes for my level but as I still retain the corse text, I will use it for future reference and review its contents thoroughly.
As for the presentations, for the final project for this course we were allowed to present about almost any person we wanted. I chose Hiromi Uehara who is a world-famous jazz pianist from Japan. The fact that we were allowed to chose whoever we wanted and use whatever grammar from the book allowed for us to be somewhat creative with our presentations and papers provided we used a sufficient amount of grammar and vocabulary from the book. The text for this class had a number of interesting passaged from short sections about environmental problems to the history of written Japanese. The varied content provided in the text ensured that everyone could find a section that her or she was interested. This was good because it is much easier to learn vocabulary and grammar for subject that an individual is personally interested in.
