3. MLO 3: Secondary Culture
3.1. Students describe concepts of culture and use that understanding in their comparison of the target culture with second culture.
3.2. Students will analyze and make connections between the perspectives, ways of thinking, behavioral practices, and cultural products of a second culture.
Courses taken to fulfill this requirement:
SPAN 308 - Hist/Cultr Aztlan:SW US
Covers the story of indigenous peoples of the southwestern United States: Aztlán, the Spanish colonial period, the Mexican period, and the acquisition and settlement by the United States. Seeks the exposition of indigenous and Hispanic historical and cultural foundations of the region and the confluence with other Asian and European influences. Taught in English with Spanish readings for Spanish majors. Also available online.
MLO 1: Reflective Narrative
MLOs 3.1 and 3.2 were met by taking SPAN 308 which covered the history of Mexico and its indigenous inhabitants (see attached portfolio of assignments). The course covered a variety of topics, most which stemmed from the onset of Spanish colonialism. The course covered the story of indigenous peoples of the southwestern United States: Aztlán, the Spanish colonial period, the Mexican period, and the acquisition and settlement by the United States. It exposed the indigenous and Hispanic historical and cultural foundations of the region and the confluence with other Asian and European influences. This course expanded my knowledge of yet another culture or group of cultures related to modern Mexican-American culture. One challenge I experienced when taking this course was explaining to others why a Japanese Language and Culture major has to take Mexican history class; I still do not have an adequate explanation for why that is. I also do know why such an MLO was contrived within the Japanese Language and Culture major. Nevertheless this class satisfied the MLO requirement and provided me with information which I was previously aware of, but was lacking in details. The portfolio attached contains all the assignments from the class.
I fully understand the importance of learning about another culture to foster multicultural understanding within the college institution however, as there is apparently no solidarity in requirements among universities, the ethnic studies course I have taken during community college somehow did not fulfill this requirement. What I think would better suit this requirement is the anthropology class I took while I was studying at community college. Anthropology should be a requirement among language majors as it provides the most objective perspective and context for the evolution and development of autonomous languages and cultures. Nevertheless, to fulfill 3.1 SPAN 308 developed my understanding of the cultures, both present and past, of Spanish, Mexican, American, Mexican-American, and native cultures. It provided me with several perspectives relating to the historical development of modern societies which we analyzed thoroughly through out assignments fulfilling MLO 3.2.
