JAPN 404: Advanced Japanese Research
Description
This course aims to develop advanced proficiency in communication through oral and written presentations to finalize research project for Capstone in Japanese using appropriate media. Taught in Japanese.
Taken together with the capstone course, this course set the stage for academic writing in Japanese. It covered the grammar structures and sentence patterns necessary for writing competently in Japanese for research, publications, school papers, and so on. It highlighted the difference between spoken Japanese and written Japanese and also pointed out how sentence structures can change depending on the context and publication of the writing. It is worth mentioning that the Japanese involved in the homework assignments was a little above my level and I often needed assistance from the exchange students to complete the homework assignments. I also feel that this class could have benefited more from "mandatory" deadlines to ensure our progress. It seems that the deadlines written on the syllabus were often overlooked as students were caught up with the work they had from other classes.
The homework in the class focused on grammar worksheets which I will retain for future reference. During the second half of the semester, this class turned into a capstone practice and capstone revision class where we would translate our presentations and have them checked for accuracy. This class significantly assisted with writing the proper Japanese necessary for completing the Japanese paper required at the end of the semester. With the help of the Japanese faculty, we managed to scrape together our presentations in both Japanese and English as well as our papers.
