JAPN 402: Japanese Literature
Description
This course aims to develop advanced proficiency through introducing various aspects of modern Japanese literature, including short stories and significant works by authors of the modern period. Taught in Japanese.
This class was a very interesting class as it provided us with information about various historical and modern Japanese writers and poets such as Moi Ogai, Natsume Soseki, Haruki Murakami, and others. It gave my historical context to Japanese literature which I was lacking before taking this course. The part of this course I found most constructive was the fact that we were able to compose our own poems and short stories which I feel really contributes to my Japanese retention as well as creativity.
The passages that we read during the course of this class were in general very interesting. Although there were times when I did not understand every detail within a story, I understood enough to discern the characters, plot, and meaning of a given piece of literature. In the beginning of the course, some of the poems we covered used older Japanese, words I was not aware of but I felt that it contributed to the richness of Japanese historical literature.
For this class, I wrote a number of poems, haikus, and short stories which I will cherish for their oddness and uniqueness. I wrote several poems about the difficulty of capstone class and how it evokes dark emotions from within me. This class was fun despite my disinterest in literature.
